Affordable Destinations in Malaysia for a Short Getaway!
Finally over a hectic week at work or university? Wanna have some quality time for yourself or family or your friends, but you're currently on a budget? Fret not, here's a list of places in Malaysia that you can go try and have fun without even worrying about spending too much!
1. Pulau Langkawi
The perfect destination to relax and unwind is Langkawi. It is a well-loved destination among Malaysians. Soak up the sun at Pantai Cenang and Tanjung Rhu Beach or you can lay your picnic mat at the Seven Wells Waterfall. You can also walk along the Langkawi Sky Bridge and ride the famous Langkawi Cable Car to catch a scenic view from the peak of Manchincang Mountain.
Besides that, most shops in Langkawi are duty-free but NOT ALL SHOPS ARE. The best place to go is Kuah Town where the confectionaries such as Cadbury and Daim are slightly cheaper.
2. Ipoh, Perak
While Malaysians often associate Ipoh to richly brewed coffee, Ipoh is also a destination that boasts a laid-back vibe and an equally charming towns cape. Situated within a 2-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, walk along the streets and you’re likely to spot the old (Chinese kopitiams) and new (modern street art) that fit together like two puzzle pieces. If you can stomach all the local food you can find, start with a hearty curry mee or nasi kandar before tackling bowls of tau fu fah, cendol, and ais kepal.
3. Melaka
If you're into history, then Melaka is one of the few destinations that comes to mind. Peppered with historical attractions such as the Stadhuys, A’Famosa Fort and Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum, you can learn up additional facts that you won’t normally find in your school’s history books before. To make your visit complete, fuel up by savouring fiery asam pedas and curry laksa first. Then, leave your footprints at the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum, Melaka River Cruise, and Jonker Walk. For a treat, get your dessert fix with a bowl of cendol at Jonker 88.
4. George Town, Penang
Check out the Penang tourism centres for free guided tours and inexpensive monthly events you can enjoy. Keep an eye out for ‘Last Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Month’ for free guided tours to Penang Botanic Gardens and George Town’s heritage circle. The food here is generally cheap too, so you can savour curry mee, nasi kandar, and mee sotong to your heart’s content.
5. Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
Home to the highest mountain in Malaysia, there’s more to Sabah than just Mount Kinabalu. You’ll be surprised by how many things you can do. You can go whitewater rafting at Padas River, ziplining at Kiulu River and jungle trekking at Danum Valley. Besides the number of outdoor activities that will keep you occupied, Sabah is also famous for their fresh seafood. Head over to Kampung Nelayan restaurant in Luyang for BBQ steamboat as well as soy sauce prawns, fried sotong and asam pedas fish fillet.
